A normal blood count rules out lymphoma?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many people with lymphoma have completely normal blood counts, especially early or in localised disease.

Blood testA useful guide, but no single routine blood test can confirm or rule out this cancer on its own.

Why people believe it

A normal blood report feels reassuring, and families may stop looking for the cause of a swollen node.

What the evidence shows

Lymphoma usually grows in the lymph nodes, not in the blood, so blood counts are often normal. Some tests, such as LDH, may be raised, but none can confirm or rule out lymphoma. Only a biopsy of the affected node or tissue can make the diagnosis.

What you can do

If a node is persistent or growing, don't let normal blood tests end the investigation. Ask whether a biopsy is needed.
