Lymphoma occurs only in elderly people?

✕ Not true
Fact

Hodgkin lymphoma commonly affects teenagers and young adults, while many non-Hodgkin lymphomas become more common with age. Lymphoma can occur at any age.

Why people believe it

Cancer is often thought of as a disease of older people, so a swollen gland in a young person may not be taken seriously.

What the evidence shows

Hodgkin lymphoma most often affects people aged about 15 to 35, with a second, smaller peak in older adults. Many types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are more common with age, but some, such as Burkitt and lymphoblastic lymphoma, mainly affect children and young adults.

What you can do

Age doesn't rule out lymphoma. A persistent, growing lymph node needs checking at any age.
