Lymphoma Myth Buster #02 · Causes & warning signs

A painless neck swelling is always tuberculosis?

✕ Not true
Fact

TB is an important cause of swollen nodes in India, but lymphoma can also cause painless swelling in the neck, armpit or groin. A tissue diagnosis may be needed.

Why people believe it

TB of the lymph nodes is common in India, so many neck swellings are treated with TB medicines without a confirmed diagnosis.

What the evidence shows

TB and lymphoma can look very similar: both can cause painless neck swelling, fever, night sweats and weight loss. Starting TB treatment without proof can delay the diagnosis of lymphoma by months, and exposes people to medicines they don't need. A biopsy of the node, tested for both TB and lymphoma, gives the answer.

What you can do

Ask for a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis before starting TB treatment for a swollen node. If a node isn't shrinking on TB treatment, go back to your doctor.
