Lymphoma Myth Buster #04 · Causes & warning signs

Lymphoma is contagious and can spread between family members?

✕ Not true
Fact

Lymphoma itself is not contagious. Some infections, such as EBV, HIV and H. pylori, are linked with certain types, but that does not make lymphoma catching.

Why people believe it

Because some lymphomas are linked to viruses or bacteria, families sometimes fear catching it, and isolate the person.

What the evidence shows

Lymphoma cannot be passed from one person to another by touch, sharing food, utensils or living together. Some infections increase the risk of particular lymphomas in some people: Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), HIV, and H. pylori in the stomach. This happens inside an individual's body over time, and the lymphoma itself never spreads to others.

What you can do

Eat together, sit together, care for each other. A person with lymphoma needs their family close, not kept apart.
