Multiple myeloma Myth Buster #12 · Treatment & bone health

Every patient with myeloma needs chemotherapy immediately?

✕ Not true
Fact

MGUS and most smouldering myeloma are monitored rather than treated. Active myeloma generally needs treatment, and some high-risk smouldering cases may be considered for early treatment.

Why people believe it

Families expect any cancer diagnosis to mean treatment straight away.

What the evidence shows

Treatment starts when myeloma is "active", meaning it is causing, or very likely to cause, damage such as high calcium, kidney problems, anaemia or bone damage. Before that stage, careful monitoring is usually safer than treatment and its side effects.

What you can do

Ask which stage your condition is at, and what would trigger the start of treatment.
