Multiple myeloma Myth Buster #17 · Prognosis & survivorship

A normal blood count means myeloma has completely disappeared?

✕ Not true
Fact

The response is measured with myeloma-specific tests: the abnormal protein, free light chains, bone marrow findings and sometimes MRD testing. Normal blood counts alone don't show remission.

Why people believe it

When anaemia improves, people often feel the myeloma has gone.

What the evidence shows

Doctors track myeloma by measuring the abnormal protein (paraprotein) and free light chains in the blood, and sometimes by repeating the bone marrow test, including sensitive minimal residual disease (MRD) tests. These show how deep the response is, which helps guide treatment.

What you can do

Ask what your paraprotein and light chain results are, and what they mean for your treatment.
