Multiple myeloma Myth Buster #16 · Prognosis & survivorship

If myeloma has damaged the kidneys, recovery is impossible?

✕ Not true
Fact

Kidney function can improve, especially when myeloma is treated promptly and other reversible causes are addressed. Some patients do have permanent damage.

Kidney function testChecked regularly; it often improves once myeloma treatment starts.

Why people believe it

People who need dialysis at diagnosis often assume they will need it for life.

What the evidence shows

The abnormal proteins made by myeloma can block and damage the kidneys. Prompt myeloma treatment, plenty of fluids, and avoiding medicines that harm the kidneys, such as some painkillers, can allow kidney function to recover, and some people come off dialysis. The earlier treatment starts, the better the chance of recovery.

What you can do

Drink plenty of fluids as advised, avoid painkillers such as ibuprofen and diclofenac, and tell any doctor ordering a scan with contrast dye that you have myeloma.
