A healthy diet and regular exercise completely prevent prostate cancer?

Fact

Healthy habits support overall health, but they cannot eliminate the risk of prostate cancer.

Why people believe it

Many people believe that a healthy lifestyle guarantees protection from cancer, and that men who get it must have done something wrong.

What the evidence shows

Staying active and keeping a healthy weight are good for the heart, the bones and general health, and excess weight has been linked with more aggressive prostate cancer. But the biggest risk factors, age, family history and genes, can't be changed. Supplements such as lycopene or selenium have not been shown to prevent prostate cancer, and high-dose vitamin E may even raise the risk.

What you can do

Keep up healthy habits for their many benefits, but don't rely on them in place of discussing testing with your doctor, or getting symptoms checked.
