Prostate cancer is always a fast-growing, fatal disease?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many prostate cancers grow very slowly, while some are aggressive. The outlook depends on the grade, stage, PSA level and other factors.

Why people believe it

The word "cancer" makes most people assume the worst, and stories of men who died from prostate cancer are what people remember.

What the evidence shows

Prostate cancers vary enormously. Many are low-grade and grow so slowly that they may never cause harm in a man's lifetime. Others are aggressive and need prompt treatment. Doctors judge this from the biopsy grade (the Gleason score or Grade Group), the stage, and the PSA level. Most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it.

What you can do

Ask your doctor about your cancer's grade, stage and risk group, and what these mean for your treatment choices.
