Prostate cancer Myth Buster #08 · Symptoms & PSA

A normal PSA test completely rules out prostate cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Prostate cancer can be present even when the PSA level is relatively low. PSA helps assess risk; it can't rule cancer out completely.

Why people believe it

PSA is known as the "prostate cancer blood test", so a normal result can feel like a guarantee.

What the evidence shows

PSA is a protein made by the prostate. Higher levels can be a sign of cancer, but some men with prostate cancer, including occasionally aggressive cancer, have a PSA in the "normal" range. What counts as normal also varies with age. A PSA that keeps rising over time can matter more than a single result.

What you can do

If you have symptoms, or your doctor feels something unusual on examination, follow up even if your PSA is normal. Keep a record of your PSA results over the years.
