Prostate cancer always causes urinary problems?

✕ Not true
Fact

Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms at all. Urinary problems are much more often caused by a harmless enlargement of the prostate (BPH).

Why people believe it

The prostate surrounds the urine tube, so men expect any prostate cancer to affect passing urine.

What the evidence shows

Most prostate cancers start in the outer part of the gland, away from the urine tube, so they usually cause no symptoms while they are small. Urinary symptoms in older men are usually caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. Symptoms of advanced prostate cancer can include bone pain, especially in the back or hips, or unexplained weight loss.

What you can do

Don't wait for urinary symptoms before discussing prostate cancer testing with your doctor, especially if you are over 50 or have a family history.
