A raised PSA always means prostate cancer?
PSA can rise because of an enlarged prostate, inflammation or infection of the prostate, a urine infection, urine retention or a recent procedure.

A high PSA result is often heard as a cancer diagnosis, causing a great deal of fear.
What the evidence shows
Most men with a raised PSA do not have prostate cancer. Common causes include BPH, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), urine infections, being unable to empty the bladder, and recent procedures such as a catheter or cystoscopy. Ejaculation and vigorous cycling in the day or two before the test can also raise it slightly. Doctors often repeat the test, treat any infection first, and may recommend an MRI scan before deciding whether a biopsy is needed.
What you can do
Don't panic over a single raised PSA. Ask your doctor whether it should be repeated, and whether an MRI is the next step.
