For prostate cancer that is confined to the prostate, radical prostatectomy (removing the prostate) and radiotherapy have similar chances of cure for suitable men. Radiotherapy may be given from outside the body, sometimes with a short course of hormone therapy, or as brachytherapy, with radioactive sources placed inside the prostate. The choice depends on the cancer, the man's age and health, and how he weighs the different possible side effects.
