Sarcoma Myth Buster #21 · Causes & warning signs

A child who can walk or play normally can't have bone cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Early osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma may cause pain that comes and goes, while the child still walks, runs and plays normally.

Doctor's examinationA doctor's examination is the first step. Mention every symptom, and how long it has lasted.

Why people believe it

Parents naturally judge how serious a problem is by how much it stops their child. If the child is still playing cricket or running around, the pain doesn't seem worrying.

What the evidence shows

In the early stages, a bone tumour often causes pain that comes and goes, eases with rest or simple painkillers, and doesn't stop the child from being active. Limping, swelling and difficulty using the limb usually come later, as the tumour grows. Waiting for these signs can delay the diagnosis by months.

What you can do

Don't wait for limping or swelling. Pain in one spot that keeps returning for more than two weeks, or that wakes your child at night, needs a doctor's check, however active your child is.
