Sarcoma Myth Buster #23 · Causes & warning signs

Osteosarcoma always starts around the knee?

✕ Not true
Fact

The bones around the knee are the most common sites, but osteosarcoma also occurs in the upper arm, pelvis, jaw and other bones.

X-rayThe first test for bone pain or swelling. If symptoms continue, an MRI may still be needed.

Why people believe it

Osteosarcoma is so often described as a "knee tumour" that pain elsewhere may not raise concern.

What the evidence shows

Osteosarcoma most often starts in the lower end of the thigh bone or the upper end of the shin bone, near the knee, and next most often in the upper arm bone near the shoulder. But it can develop in almost any bone, including the pelvis, the jaw, the spine and the ribs. Tumours in the pelvis or spine can be harder to spot, because pain there is easily blamed on other causes.

What you can do

Persistent bone pain anywhere in the body, with the same warning signs of pain that keeps returning, worsens, or wakes the child at night, deserves the same attention as pain near the knee.
