Every bone swelling is an infection or tuberculosis?

Ewing sarcoma can look very like a bone infection, in symptoms and on X-ray. Swelling that persists or behaves unusually needs specialist assessment, and sometimes a biopsy.

Ewing sarcoma can cause fever, pain, swelling and raised blood markers of inflammation, and its appearance on X-ray can resemble a bone infection (osteomyelitis). As a result, some children receive months of antibiotics or TB treatment before the correct diagnosis is made. A biopsy, planned by a specialist team, gives the answer.
