Sarcoma Myth Buster #06 · Diagnosis

If an X-ray looks normal, bone cancer is completely ruled out?

Fact

An X-ray is the right first test, but if symptoms persist, an MRI and a specialist opinion may still be needed.

X-rayTakes a few seconds, and uses a very small dose of radiation.

A normal X-ray report feels reassuring, and families may stop looking for the cause of the pain.

What the evidence shows

X-rays show most bone tumours, but early changes can be subtle, and some tumours, particularly in the pelvis or spine, are hard to see. An MRI scan shows the bone marrow and surrounding tissues in much more detail.

What you can do

If pain, swelling or limping continues despite a normal X-ray, go back to the doctor and ask whether an MRI or a specialist review is needed.
