Sarcoma Myth Buster #34 · Causes & warning signs

A bruise or rash on a breast treated with radiotherapy years ago is nothing to worry about?

Fact

Most marks on a treated breast are harmless, but a bruise-like purple patch or small lumps that don't fade within about two weeks need a biopsy, because a rare cancer called angiosarcoma can start in the treated skin.

Bruises are common and the skin of a treated breast can stay discoloured, so a new patch is easily put down to an injury or an infection.

What the evidence shows

Angiosarcoma is a rare cancer of blood vessels that can develop in the skin of the breast or chest wall, usually four to ten years after radiotherapy. It looks like a bruise, a purple or dark red patch, or small nodules, and is often treated at first as a bruise or a skin infection. It is very rare, affecting roughly 1 or 2 in 1,000 women ten years after breast-conserving treatment, so it is never a reason to refuse radiotherapy that is needed. Found early, it can be removed by surgery.

What you can do

If a bruise, discoloured patch or small lump on a treated breast hasn't faded within two weeks, show it to your cancer doctor and ask whether a small skin biopsy is needed.
