If chemotherapy doesn't visibly shrink an osteosarcoma, it has completely failed?
Osteosarcoma often shrinks little on scans, even when most of the tumour has died. The response is measured under the microscope after surgery.
Why people believe it
Families watch scans closely during chemotherapy, and are frightened when the tumour doesn't look smaller.
What the evidence shows
Osteosarcoma is made partly of bone-like material, which stays in place even after the cancer cells within it have died, so the tumour may look much the same size on a scan. After the operation, the pathologist examines the removed tumour and measures how much of it has died. When most of the tumour is dead, usually 90% or more, the response is considered good. This result helps guide the rest of treatment. Less pain and a softer swelling are often early signs that chemotherapy is working.
What you can do
Don't judge chemotherapy by the scan size alone. Ask your team what the scans and the pathology results show, and complete the planned treatment.
