If the lungs are clear at diagnosis, chemotherapy isn't needed?

Even the best scans can only show deposits once they reach a certain size. Before chemotherapy was used, most patients with osteosarcoma whose scans were clear at diagnosis later developed spread to the lungs, from cancer cells that had been too small to see. Ewing sarcoma behaves in the same way. Chemotherapy treats these hidden cells, and is why many more patients are now cured.
