A tumour that shrinks after chemotherapy is completely cured?
Shrinking on a scan doesn't mean the cancer is gone. Completing the planned surgery or radiotherapy, and the full course of treatment, remains essential.
Why people believe it
When a child starts to feel better and the swelling goes down, families understandably hope the cancer has gone, and some stop treatment early.
What the evidence shows
Chemotherapy often shrinks sarcomas and relieves pain, which is very encouraging. But living cancer cells usually remain, even when the tumour looks much smaller on a scan. The planned surgery or radiotherapy, and the remaining chemotherapy, are what give the best chance of cure. Stopping treatment early is one of the most common reasons sarcomas come back.
What you can do
Complete every part of the treatment plan, even when your child feels well. If cost, travel or side effects are making it hard to continue, tell the team early; they may be able to help.
