If osteosarcoma has spread to the lungs, treatment is useless?
Some patients whose lung spread can be removed by surgery achieve long-term survival, or cure, with combined treatment. The outlook depends on how much spread there is and how it responds.

The lungs are the most common place for osteosarcoma to spread. Unlike many other cancers, a limited number of lung nodules from osteosarcoma can often be removed by surgery, alongside chemotherapy, and some patients are cured this way. The outlook is better when there are fewer nodules, when all of them can be removed, and when they respond to chemotherapy. With chemotherapy and surgery to remove every nodule, up to about half of patients whose osteosarcoma has spread only to the lungs can survive long term.

Ask whether surgery to remove the lung nodules is possible, and consider a second opinion from a sarcoma centre before deciding on a plan.
