Sarcoma Myth Buster #19 · Survival & quality of life

A child treated for bone cancer will never walk or play normally again?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many survivors walk, run and take part in physical activities after limb-sparing surgery or amputation with rehabilitation. How much they can do depends on the treatment and reconstruction.

Why people believe it

Families imagine a life of disability after major bone surgery, and children worry about being left out at school and play.

What the evidence shows

With physiotherapy and rehabilitation, most children learn to walk again after limb-sparing surgery, and many return to school, play and sports. Children with an amputation can often run and play sports with a modern artificial limb. Some activities, such as high-impact or contact sports, may need to be limited to protect an implant.

What you can do

Start physiotherapy as soon as the team advises, and keep it up at home. Ask which activities are safe, and set goals together with your child.
