Screening and prevention Myth Buster #15 · Screening tests

A negative stool blood test completely rules out colorectal cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Stool tests can miss cancers and large polyps. Symptoms such as persistent bleeding or unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia need full investigation, even after a negative test.

A normal result can feel like the final answer.

What the evidence shows

Stool tests look for hidden blood, but tumours bleed on and off, so a single test can be negative even when a cancer is present. They work well as screening when repeated regularly. For people with symptoms, a colonoscopy is usually needed.

What you can do

If you have bowel symptoms, don't let a negative stool test end the investigation.
