Screening and prevention Myth Buster #18 · Who needs screening

If there is no family history, cancer screening is unnecessary?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many cancers occur without any family history. Screening recommendations for the general population don't depend only on inherited risk.

Why people believe it

People often think screening is only for those with cancer in the family.

What the evidence shows

Most breast, cervical and bowel cancers occur in people with no affected relatives. Screening programmes are designed for everyone in the recommended age groups. A family history may mean starting earlier or screening more often, but its absence doesn't mean screening can be skipped.

What you can do

Follow the screening recommended for your age, whatever your family history.
