Screening and prevention Myth Buster #19 · Who needs screening

More screening tests always mean better cancer prevention?

✕ Not true
Fact

Unnecessary tests can cause false alarms, overdiagnosis, anxiety, radiation exposure and avoidable procedures. Screening should have a proven overall benefit for the individual.

Why people believe it

It seems logical that the more you test, the safer you are.

What the evidence shows

Every test has limits. Tests done without good reason can find harmless abnormalities, leading to more scans, biopsies and worry. Some can find slow-growing cancers that would never have caused harm (overdiagnosis), leading to treatment that wasn't needed. Good screening means the right tests, at the right ages and intervals.

What you can do

Choose screening tests with your doctor, based on evidence, rather than taking every test in a package.
