Screening and prevention Myth Buster #16 · Who needs screening

Everyone should have a yearly low-dose CT scan for lung cancer?

✕ Not true
Fact

Low-dose CT screening is recommended only for defined high-risk groups, mainly based on age and smoking history. It is not recommended for all adults.

Why people believe it

If a CT scan can find lung cancer early, it seems logical for everyone to have one.

What the evidence shows

Lung cancer screening has been shown to save lives in people at high risk, mainly adults aged about 50 to 80 with a long history of heavy smoking. In people at lower risk, the scans often find harmless spots, leading to more tests and worry, without clear benefit.

What you can do

Ask your doctor whether lung screening is right for you, based on your age and smoking history.
