Palliative sedation and pain relief are the same thing?

✕ Not true
Fact

Palliative sedation is a separate, carefully governed treatment for suffering that can't be relieved in any other way, at the very end of life. Routine pain relief doesn't aim to reduce consciousness.

Why people believe it

Families sometimes fear that pain medicines are meant to make the patient sleep.

What the evidence shows

Ordinary pain relief aims to control pain while keeping the person as alert as possible. Palliative sedation is used rarely, only when severe suffering cannot be relieved by any other means in the final days of life. It is decided carefully, with the patient where possible, and the family, and is closely monitored.
