Some families think palliative care means withholding all medical treatment.

What the evidence shows

Palliative care uses whatever helps comfort and quality of life. A blood transfusion can relieve breathlessness and tiredness, antibiotics can treat a distressing infection, and radiotherapy can relieve pain or bleeding. Whether each is right depends on the likely benefit, the burden, and the patient's wishes.

What you can do

Ask whether a particular treatment could relieve a symptom, and how it fits with the patient's goals.
