Stage IV cancer means death is near?

Stage IV usually means the cancer has spread. But the outlook varies enormously with the type of cancer, its molecular features, how much there is and how it responds to treatment. Some people live for years.

"Stage IV" is often heard as "the end", and families may begin to grieve from the day of diagnosis.

Stage describes where the cancer is, not how long a person will live. Some people with stage IV cancer, such as hormone-sensitive breast cancer, prostate cancer, or cancers with a targetable gene change, live for many years with good treatment. Others have more aggressive disease. The type of cancer, its features, the person's overall health and how well treatment works all matter.
