Stage IV and palliative care Myth Buster #17 · Quality of life & dignity

Strong pain medicines inevitably shorten life?

✕ Not true
Fact

Carefully adjusted morphine-like medicines are used to relieve suffering, not to hasten death. They need careful dosing and monitoring, because excessive doses can cause dangerous drowsiness or slowed breathing.

Why people believe it

Many families fear that giving morphine will bring death closer.

What the evidence shows

When the dose is started low and adjusted carefully, strong pain medicines relieve pain without shortening life; uncontrolled pain itself causes great harm. Too high a dose can cause dangerous drowsiness or slowed breathing, which is why doses are adjusted step by step, with monitoring.

What you can do

Give pain medicines exactly as prescribed, and report excessive drowsiness, confusion or slowed breathing straight away.
