Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #07 · Diagnosis & screening

Every thyroid nodule needs a biopsy?

✕ Not true
Fact

Whether a biopsy is needed depends on the nodule's appearance on ultrasound, its size and other factors. Some nodules only need monitoring.

Why people believe it

Some people want every nodule biopsied, just to be sure.

What the evidence shows

Doctors use ultrasound scoring systems to judge each nodule's risk. Nodules with suspicious features, above a certain size, usually need a biopsy. Small nodules, or those with harmless features, can often be safely watched with repeat ultrasounds. This avoids unnecessary procedures.

What you can do

Ask your doctor what your ultrasound showed, and why a biopsy is or isn't recommended. If monitoring is advised, keep to the scan schedule.
