Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #09 · Diagnosis & screening

A thyroid biopsy makes cancer spread?

✕ Not true
Fact

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) is generally safe. Significant spread from a biopsy is exceptionally rare, and should not deter a biopsy that is needed.

What to do

If an FNA is recommended, don't delay it. Ask what the result means when it comes back.

Fine needle aspiration (FNA)

Why people believe it

Many people fear that a needle will disturb a cancer and make it spread.

What the evidence shows

In an FNA, a very fine needle, guided by ultrasound, takes a few cells from the nodule. It takes a few minutes in the clinic, usually without any anaesthetic, and you go home straight afterwards. Some results are clear; others are "indeterminate", and may need a repeat biopsy, further testing or surgery to be sure.

What you can do

If an FNA is recommended, don't delay it. Ask what the result means when it comes back.
