Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #08 · Diagnosis & screening

A normal ultrasound means thyroid cancer is impossible?

✕ Not true
Fact

A good-quality ultrasound is the main test for thyroid nodules, but no test is perfect. Suspicious findings on examination may still need further tests.

A normal report feels like the end of the matter.

What the evidence shows

Thyroid ultrasound is very good at finding and assessing nodules, but its quality depends on the equipment and the person doing it, and very small or unusual cancers can occasionally be missed. If a lump can be felt, is growing, or comes with hoarseness or neck nodes, it should be re-examined.

What you can do

If symptoms continue or the lump changes despite a normal ultrasound, go back to your doctor.
