Recurrent thyroid cancer can be treated with surgery, radioactive iodine when suitable, local treatments or targeted medicines, depending on the situation.

Thyroid cancer sometimes returns in the neck, often years later, and is usually found early on follow-up ultrasound or blood tests. It can often be removed with further surgery, or treated with more radioactive iodine, ablation or radiotherapy. For cancer that spreads further and no longer responds to iodine, targeted tablets can control it.
