Thyroid cancer Myth Buster #16 · Prognosis & survivorship

Thyroid cancer is always harmless because it grows slowly?

✕ Not true
Fact

Many thyroid cancers grow slowly and have an excellent outlook, but aggressive variants, medullary and anaplastic cancer can cause serious illness.

Why people believe it

Thyroid cancer is often called "the good cancer", so some people delay treatment or skip follow-up.

What the evidence shows

Most papillary and follicular cancers are highly treatable, and most people are cured. But some subtypes behave more aggressively, medullary cancer can spread early, and anaplastic cancer is one of the most aggressive cancers of all. Even slow-growing cancers need proper treatment and follow-up.

What you can do

Take thyroid cancer seriously: complete the recommended treatment and keep your follow-up.
