Why people believe it

Many people fear that living without a bladder, or with a urine bag, will mean the end of work, travel and a normal social life.

What the evidence shows

After the bladder is removed, the surgeon creates a new way for urine to leave the body. The most common is a urostomy, in which urine drains through a small opening on the tummy into a discreet bag worn under clothes. Some people can have a new bladder made from a piece of bowel (neobladder), and pass urine in the usual way. With training from a stoma nurse and time to adjust, most people return to work, travel, exercise and intimate relationships.

What you can do

Before surgery, ask which type of urinary diversion suits you, and ask to meet a stoma nurse. Talking to others who have been through it can also help.
