Radiotherapy always destroys bladder function?

✕ Not true
Fact

Modern radiotherapy can preserve a working bladder in suitable patients, although urinary and bowel side effects are possible.

Why people believe it

People worry that radiation will leave the bladder scarred and useless.

What the evidence shows

Most people who have bladder-preserving radiotherapy keep a bladder that works well. During treatment, it is common to need to pass urine more often or urgently, with some burning, or to have looser stools. These usually settle in the weeks after treatment. A smaller number of people have longer-lasting bladder or bowel changes, which can often be helped.

What you can do

Ask your team what side effects to expect and how to manage them, and report bleeding or new bladder or bowel problems, even long after treatment.
