Bladder cancer Myth Buster #16 · Recurrence & quality of life

Once a bladder tumour is removed, it can't come back?

✕ Not true
Fact

Bladder cancer, especially the non-muscle-invasive type, often comes back. Regular cystoscopy checks, tailored to the risk, are essential.

After a successful TURBT, people feel the tumour is gone, and may skip follow-up appointments.

What the evidence shows

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer commonly returns, sometimes more than once, because the whole bladder lining has been exposed to the same causes. Most recurrences are found early on cystoscopy, before they cause symptoms, and can be removed again. Treatments placed in the bladder, such as BCG, and stopping smoking both lower the chance of recurrence.

What you can do

Keep every follow-up cystoscopy, even when you feel well, and stop smoking if you smoke.
