If a brain tumour is benign, it never needs treatment?
Some benign tumours can simply be watched with scans. Others need surgery or radiotherapy because they grow, cause symptoms or press on important structures.

Why people believe it
"Benign" sounds like "harmless", so some people decide they can ignore it, or stop attending follow-up.
What the evidence shows
Many small benign tumours, such as some meningiomas, grow very slowly or not at all, and can be safely monitored with regular MRI scans ("watch and wait"). But if a benign tumour grows, causes seizures, headaches or weakness, or presses on the nerves to the eyes or hearing, treatment is usually advised, with surgery, radiosurgery or radiotherapy.
What you can do
If you are told your tumour can be watched, keep every scheduled MRI, and report new symptoms early, without waiting for the next scan.
