Brain tumour Myth Buster #14 · Surgery & tumour behaviour

A brain tumour that can't be completely removed is automatically incurable?

Fact

The outlook depends on the tumour's type and molecular features, and on the treatments available. Some tumours that can't be fully removed are controlled for many years.

Why people believe it

When the surgeon says that part of the tumour had to be left behind, families often hear that the treatment has failed.

What the evidence shows

Surgeons sometimes leave part of a tumour behind on purpose, because removing it would damage important areas that control movement, speech or vision. What happens next depends on the type of tumour. Remaining parts of benign tumours may be watched or treated with radiosurgery or radiotherapy, and some never grow again. Some slow-growing gliomas are controlled for many years with further treatment.

What you can do

Ask your doctor what was left behind and why, what the plan is for it, and what the outlook is for your specific tumour type.
