A brain biopsy or surgery makes cancer spread faster?

A properly performed biopsy or operation does not generally make a brain tumour grow or spread faster. These are often essential for diagnosis and treatment.

Surgery and biopsy do not make brain tumours spread. A tissue sample tells doctors the exact type of tumour, and modern molecular tests on that sample help decide the best treatment and predict how it will behave. Removing as much of a tumour as is safely possible can also relieve pressure and symptoms. If someone gets worse after surgery, it is usually because of swelling or the tumour's own behaviour, not because the operation spread it.
