Brain tumour Myth Buster #19 · Treatment & survival

Brain cancer always means death within a few months?

✕ Not true
Fact

Outcomes vary enormously. Some aggressive tumours have a poor outlook, while other brain tumours are curable or can be controlled for many years.

What to do

Ask your doctor about the outlook for your specific tumour type, and what treatment can offer. Avoid comparing yourself with other people's stories, which may involve very different tumours.

Why people believe it

Most people have heard of brain tumours through stories of the most aggressive types, so any brain tumour diagnosis can feel like a death sentence.

What the evidence shows

“Brain tumour” covers well over a hundred different types. Many meningiomas and other benign tumours can be cured. People with oligodendroglioma, a slow-growing glioma, now often live 15 to 20 years or more; about 9 in 10 children with low-grade gliomas are alive 20 years later. Some tumours, such as glioblastoma, are aggressive and harder to treat, but treatment extends life (on average to well over a year in fit patients) and improves its quality, and palliative care helps control symptoms at every stage.
