Chemotherapy can't work against brain tumours because of the blood–brain barrier?

Some chemotherapy and targeted medicines work well against certain brain tumours. How well they work depends on the tumour and the drug.

The blood–brain barrier does keep many substances out of the brain, but not all. Some chemotherapy drugs, such as temozolomide, cross it and are a standard part of treatment for certain gliomas. Tumours can also weaken the barrier around them. And some newer targeted tablets, used for lung or breast cancers with particular gene changes, reach the brain well and can shrink tumours that have spread there.
