✕ Not true

Follow-upRegular check-ups find any return of the cancer early, and help with late effects of treatment.

Why people believe it

Finishing treatment is a huge milestone, and many women understandably want to put cancer behind them.

What the evidence shows

Most women treated for breast cancer stay well, but the cancer can return, sometimes many years later; some hormone-sensitive cancers can come back 10 to 20 years after diagnosis. Regular follow-up, and continuing treatments such as hormonal therapy for as long as prescribed, lower that risk and help find any return early.

What you can do

Keep your follow-up visits, take long-term medicines, such as hormone tablets, for the full time prescribed, and tell your doctor early about anything new: a lump, persistent pain, a cough or unexplained weight loss.
