Breast infection (mastitis) is common, especially while breastfeeding, so a red, warm, swollen breast is usually treated with antibiotics first. The danger comes when it does not get better and the same treatment is simply repeated.

Inflammatory breast cancer is uncommon, but it can look exactly like an infection: redness over a large part of the breast, warmth, swelling, and skin that looks like orange peel. It usually develops over a few weeks, and there may be no lump at all. It does not improve with antibiotics. A scan and a biopsy of the breast and skin make the diagnosis, and early treatment matters.

If breast redness or swelling has not clearly improved after one course of antibiotics, especially if you are not breastfeeding, ask for a scan and a breast specialist opinion without delay.
