Breast cancer Myth Buster #23 · Symptoms

A nipple rash is just eczema?

✕ Not true
Fact

A one-sided rash, crusting or itching of the nipple that does not heal can be Paget disease, a form of breast cancer.

Why people believe it

Skin changes on the nipple look like eczema or a fungal rash, so creams are often tried for months before anyone looks further.

What the evidence shows

Eczema usually affects both sides, often spares the nipple itself, and settles with creams. Paget disease of the nipple usually affects one nipple, starts on the nipple, and keeps coming back. It is often linked to a cancer deeper in the breast. A small skin biopsy, together with breast imaging, gives the answer.

What you can do

If a rash, scaling or crusting on one nipple has not healed after two to three weeks of treatment, or keeps coming back, see a breast specialist and ask whether a biopsy is needed.
