Breast cancer Myth Buster #26 · Survivorship

Once I feel fine, I can stop the hormone tablets?

✕ Not true
Fact

Hormone tablets keep protecting you only while you take them. Stopping early raises the chance of the cancer coming back.

Why people believe it

Hormone therapy, with tablets such as tamoxifen or letrozole, continues for five to ten years, long after you feel well. Side effects such as joint aches or hot flushes make stopping tempting.

What the evidence shows

For hormone-sensitive breast cancer, these tablets lower the risk of the cancer returning and of a new cancer in the other breast. The benefit depends on taking them for the full time prescribed. Many women stop early, often because of side effects that could have been eased.

What you can do

Don't stop on your own. If side effects bother you, tell your doctor: there are ways to manage them, and sometimes a different tablet suits you better.
