Mammogram radiation is dangerous?

✕ Not true
Fact

A mammogram uses a very low dose of radiation, and its benefit far outweighs the small risk.

Why people believe it

Many women skip mammograms because they are afraid of the radiation.

What the evidence shows

A mammogram uses a very low dose, about the same as the natural background radiation we all receive in seven weeks of everyday life. For most women aged 40 and above, the benefit of finding cancer early far outweighs this small risk.

What you can do

Don't let fear of radiation keep you from screening. If you are pregnant or might be, tell the staff before the test.
