Normal mammogram, safe for life?
A normal mammogram is reassuring, not a lifetime guarantee.
Telugu translation awaiting review by Dr. Haritha Chiramana.
When should mammograms start?
A short video by Dr. Haritha Chiramana on this topic. The full answer, with the evidence, is below.

Why people believe it
A normal result is a great relief, and it is natural to feel that the worry is over.
What the evidence shows
A mammogram reflects only the day it was taken. New cancers can develop later, and occasionally a mammogram misses a cancer, especially in dense breasts. That is why screening is repeated.
What you can do
Repeat screening as your doctor advises: for most women, a mammogram every one to two years from age 40, and especially between 50 and 74. In India, a free clinical breast examination is offered to women aged 30 to 65 at government health centres (Ayushman Arogya Mandirs). Women with a strong family history or a known gene change may need to start earlier, sometimes with MRI. If you notice a change in between, don't wait for your next mammogram.
